life outside the box

                                     a box.
                                     just one of many boxes.
                                     boxes stacked in rows
                                           precise
                                           orderly
                                           exact
                                              no need leaving room
                                              for margin of error,
                                              for how could error
                                              exist in a world
                                              of such order?

                                        my box was among these
                                  beautifully organized boxes.
it was the box into which I was
                       born and raised,
and that says only good of my parents who
were, of course, born into their own boxes,
                         and their parents before them
                         and their parents before them
                         and so on and on...
and boxes in and of themselves
                                 are not a bad thing.
                                       boxes give us roots.
                                            boxes give us
                                                 security.

so in my box I lived,
                                            feeling a sense of pride
                                         in the accomplishments
                                      and achievements I had
                                   reached within that box,
                                yet always undermined by
                             a sense of being unworthy.
                           not quite good enough.

                               and into their own boxes
                               my children were born
                               and raised, as with
                               me and my parents
                               before me and theirs
before them and so on and on.

                                     "why?" one might ask.
                                     "why stay within a box
                                     when so much more exists
                                            outside of the box?"

                                     the answer is quite simple.
                                         I did not know.
                                             I did not know
                                                 about a life other
                                               than that which
                                           I knew.
                                        and again, that
in and of itself is not
a bad thing. it simply is.

my box in this story of boxes
                            is religion.
                          not God.
                        not Jesus.
                      not the Spirit.
                                         no. religion.
                                    and in no way does
the story of my box speak
for another box and nor does it
seek to put down other boxes and the
                      stories which lie within.

what I have discovered in my story
is that God cannot be put into a box,
no matter how big or beautiful or
                                      close to an appearance perfect
                                          it might have.

                                          a sense of knowing God,
knowing who He is and how
deeply and passionately He loves me,
cannot be confined in a box!
in fact, it cannot be confined in
                                 this entire universe,
                                     for God is holding the
                                          universe in the palm of
                                              His hand.
                                              He created.
                                              He set in motion.
                                              He sustains all of life.

and yet He is my Father!
                                                       my Abba!
                                                   how amazing is that?

and no box or building or theology
                                          or religion can contain Him!

                                              Jesus Himself lived entirely
                                                    outside of any box into
                                                 which the people of His
                                               time attempted to put Him.

                                             and still many try.

and the Holy Spirit in a box?
                                             absolutely impossible and
                                                 inconceivable.
                                                     for how can one
                                                         contain the wind?

                                    as completely freeing and exciting
life outside that box is for me,
it is, at times, quite uncomfortable.
after all, my box was, if nothing else,
                                    comfortable.
yet I will not go back.
in fact I cannot go back...
                                                    for the mold
                                                           has been broken.
                                                                 shattered.
                                                              by the love of
                                                           the One who gave
                                                       His life for me
                                                       and for you.

I long to know Him more.
I long to live each day
in the overflow of His love,
and in so doing, to be His love
in my own small corner of this
                                                                      world.

a rainbow with no rain

                                                sometimes this heart needs
                                                    reminders.
                                                         reminders to look up.
                                                         reminders to
                                                               remember to
                                                                     remember
                                                               the faithfulness
                                                          of God.
                                                    and really, is it not
                                               written everywhere?
                                          the sky is His canvas
                                     His finger the brush.
                                     He even paints rainbows
                                       with no storm clouds or
                                           raindrops.
                                              He set millions of
                                                  water drops in the sky
to form a cloud so thin
                                                   as almost to see through.
                                                and there was the rainbow.

a gift from His heart to
                                                     my heart.
                                                        a reminder
                                                            of promises.
                                                            never will He leave.
                                                            never will He
                                                                abandon.
                                                      always He will love
                                                 and treasure and cherish
                                            and comfort and guide.
and His grace like a ribbon
                                            pours over hearts everywhere
                                                 in colors exquisite
                                                       of the rainbow.

"I have placed My rainbow in the
clouds. It is the sign of My covenant
with you and with all the earth."
                                                         Genesis 9:13

a blank manuscript ~ be brave

                                                  the music which has been
                                               singing since the
                                           morning stars first sang
                                       still sings.

with each new year a piece of
                                            manuscript paper so fresh lies
                                                  waiting for notes and rests
                                                        and chords and rhythm
                                                        and dynamics and all
                                                        that which comes to
                                                        life in a composition.

                                                  and the beauty of
                                             manuscript paper is this:
                                       the composer is literally touching
the paper with hands and fingers
                              holding the pen
                              for manuscript means
                                      written by hand.
                                              and how beautiful is that?
                                           the Creator of the universe
knows me and loves me enough
to be intimately involved in each
detail so intricate of my life song.
                              and your life song.
and this heart can barely take it in.

and perhaps equally stunning is this:
                                 although the Master Composer knows
each minute aspect and element of
my life song and your life song,
(for how can the Composer be caught
off guard by His own composition?)
still He hands us the pen,
                                       for the composition is,
                                          by its very nature, interactive.
                                            and no matter where my
                                              wandering hand and heart
allow my life song to go,
                                            still He loves me.
still His grace flows like a river
over each note of my life song.
                                  and your life song.

yet this heart can become fearful.
fearful of another note played wrong.
fearful of singing in the wrong key.
                                     just fearful.

                                  "Wait patiently for the Lord.
                                         Be brave and courageous.
Yes, wait patiently for the Lord."
                                                            Psalm 27:14

and He says to be brave.
                                                   to be courageous.
                                            to live in sweet abandonment
                                     with no fear.
to be still and listen. always listen.
to wait patiently. with no fear.
for never will the Composer leave you to
                            sing alone.

"...be strong and courageous! Do not be
afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your
God is with you wherever you go."
                                                Joshua 1:9

believe in the gift of the wait

                                                       believe.
                                                       believe in the gift.
                                                       believe that the wait
                                                              is a gift.
                                                       believe in the One who
                                                              is giving the gift
                                                                  of the wait.

                                                believe: accept (something)
as true; feel sure of the truth of.

                                       perhaps more importantly
                                           believe and accept Someone
                                                as true and truth.

                                                    and sometimes when the
                                                 wait goes on longer than
                                              the heart thinks necessary,
the gift begins to feel not
so much like a gift but
                                              rather almost as a
                                              punishment.

and never, ever is the gift of the wait
                                       a punishment
                                                for Abba is love.

                                              oh perhaps Abba is waiting
                                                     for the heart to truly
                                                            seek for Him.
or perhaps the heart already is
                                      truly seeking Him,
                                   and Abba waits for
                               a heart totally surrendered.
                                      or perhaps His timing simply
does not line up with that
                                                      of the heart waiting.
                                            whatever the purpose...
                                                   and chances are the heart
                                                            will never know the
                                                                   exact reason...
                                                             Abba will always
                                                          use the gift of the
                                                        wait
                                                     as time to draw
                                                  the waiting heart closer
                                                       to His own heart.

and how can that not be a gift?
and this heart must hold tightly
to His promises to be faithful.
                                        and believe.
                                        simply believe.

"be still in the presence of the Lord
and wait patiently for him to act."
                                                          Psalm 37:7

a world undone

                               a world undone.
                               a world coming undone.
a world coming apart at the seams.
                                           or so it would seem.

like looking at the back of a
                                              tapestry...
                                                  threads lead to places
                                                       making no sense.
                                                           knots of thread
                                                           rise like roadblocks.
                                                      color scheme?
                                                  well, it would seem
                                             that scheme to be absent.
                                         and beauty?
they say it lies in the eye of the
                                beholder.
this would take an eye partial to messes.
and so the last week would seem.
                                  in a season of celebration
                                  tears flow like the rain
                                  till no tears are left.

innocent lives cut short by what can be
                               described only as evil.
                                   laughter turned to horror
in the beat of a heart.

and does not this world truly seems to be
                               fraying and falling and fearing
                                       at every turn?
                                               children go to bed hungry.
many have not even a bed.
                                         illness or accident or violence
takes a life so precious as
                                         the family gasps for air.
                                    refugees flee from homes
                                    no longer existing
                                    not knowing to
                                    where they
                                    flee.

oh this list could fill 100 blog posts
                                      and more.
                                      and each life impacted
                                           is precious and loved
                                                 by the One who
                                                 created life itself.

yet here is the reason for
                                           and very essence of these
                                        words I write today:
                                    always there is hope.
for as long as this world
spins on its axis and the sun rises and sets
our Abba is lovingly weaving the tapestry
                       of our lives.
we see only the chaos of the back
of a masterpiece not yet complete.
                                              and often the masterpiece
is damp with His tears, for
                                              when our hearts ache,
                                              His heart breaks.

there will be a day when all is clear.
there will be a day when our eyes
see the masterpiece in all its glory.
                                   and perhaps most stunning?
I believe we will see a thread
of gold so pure and so brilliant
                                             woven throughout the design.
                                             and that thread so golden
will trace the outline of the
                                                  very hand of God.
                                                      for never does He leave
                                                      us to design our own
                                                                              lives
                                                or figure out the next
                                                                          step
                                          or save ourselves from
                                                              ourselves.

                                   no...a thousand times no.
for He is love and love cannot
                                         not love.

so never lose hope for never will
He leave us and never will His
grace and love cease to fall
                                                    in drops of beauty.
                                                         look for that beauty.
                                                       look in the ordinary.
                                                    look in the simple.
                                                 and there you will
                                               see the hand of God.
