"...for as the waters fill the sea,
the earth will be filled with an
awareness
of the glory of the LORD..."
Habakkuk 2:14
Pentecost.
the unleashing of the Spirit
on the followers of Jesus.
He had told them to wait.
to wait in Jerusalem until
the promised gift of the Father
would come in the form of the
Holy Spirit.
and. He. came.
first in wind,
then in fire,
then in word.
and the words spoken
by those freshly anointed
followers of Jesus
were not in the
languages they knew.
the Holy Spirit simply took over
and those who followed were
never the same again!
every language of every person
present in Jerusalem
that day was heard
by the very person
who could
understand it!
is that not so our God?
and whether or not we
grasp the enormity of it or not,
the same Holy Spirit lives and
breathes and loves and speaks
in and through each one of
us who follow Jesus today.
and the power of Pentecost is no different
today than it was on that first
Pentecost!
will we be as bold as the church
which was born on that day?
will we take risks and step out
in faith to follow where
His Spirit leads?
are we willing to leave
the comfort and safety
of what we know to take
that first step on the water?
for is that not the call He has
placed on our lives?
every language and people
and nation heard the gospel
that first Pentecost and
does that not give us
the same mission?
we are not called to
be content and at rest.
the word Christian is not
a noun...it is a verb!
Jesus told His followers that
the Holy Spirit would come and
give them the power to take
the gospel to the entire
world.
and that command has no
expiration date.
and I am among the guiltiest of
the guilty.
fear can paralyze.
doubt can consume.
it is safer to be safe.
yet I must choose to live
a perfectly imperfect life
in the power and outpouring
of His Spirit,
free to love and laugh
and give and share
and tell all who
will listen that
there is hope.
always there is hope.
and the essence of Pentecost
is sharing that hope that is
found in the One who
promised that initial
outpouring of the Spirit
and we will never be
the same again.
